Ski poles are often overlooked, but they have a big influence on your technique and comfort when skiing.
1. A simple length test
Turn the pole upside down, grip it just below the basket and stand it on the floor. Your arm should be bent at the elbow at a right angle (90°).
2. Adjusting for your skiing style
- Alpine skiing: Standard lengths according to the rule above.
- Freestyle and freeride: Slightly shorter poles give you more agility.
- Ski touring: Often adjustable poles, as the length is adapted to the terrain.
3. Material and grips
- Aluminium poles: Durable and affordable.
- Carbon: Lighter, but more delicate.
- Grips: Choose between rubberised and plastic grips – what matters is that they sit comfortably in your hand.
